Thailand Urges Framework for Direct Power Deals with Data Centers

WHA Utilities and Power (WHAUP), a major infrastructure provider in Thailand, has announced that it is on the verge of finalizing several water supply agreements with data center operators. Concurrently, the company is strongly urging the Thai government to establish clear regulations and guidelines for "Direct PPA" (Direct Power Purchase Agreement), which would allow data centers to purchase electricity directly from power generation companies. This initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring the stability and efficiency of electricity supply amidst the accelerating investment in data centers within Thailand. Data centers consume vast amounts of power, and traditional methods of electricity procurement may struggle to meet their rapidly growing demands flexibly and promptly. The introduction of Direct PPA would enable data center operators to negotiate directly with power suppliers, securing a more favorable and stable electricity supply. This could be a highly attractive factor for attracting further data center investments to Thailand and for the expansion of existing facilities. WHAUP is also strengthening its capacity to meet the water supply needs of data centers. With the advancement of regulations in the power sector, it is expected that Thailand will further solidify its position as a data center hub in Southeast Asia.
