M5.3 Earthquake Off Pangandaran, Indonesia, Felt Across West and Central Java

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck off the coast of Pangandaran, West Java, Indonesia, on Wednesday (5/8/2026) at approximately 9:55 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was located 79 km southwest of Pangandaran Regency at a depth of 18 km. The tremors were felt across several regions in West Java and Central Java. BMKG reported that intensities of III-IV MMI were felt in Sukabumi Regency and Bandung areas. Intensities of III MMI were recorded in Nagrak, Cilacap, Kalapanunggal, Kertasari, Baleendah, Dayeuhkolot, Majalaya, Arjasari, and Solokanjeruk. Meanwhile, areas such as Soreang, Sukabumi City, Ciwidey, Pangalengan, and Banjarnegara experienced tremors with an intensity of II-III MMI. Vibrations of II MMI were also felt in Sumedang, Ngamprah, Parongpong, Cihanjuang, Pelabuhanratu, and Lembang. Following the earthquake, the Taruna Siaga Bencana (Tagana) team in Pangandaran Regency immediately began monitoring the coastal areas. Nana Suryana, the head of Tagana Pangandaran, stated that all personnel were instructed to monitor their respective areas to ascertain any impacts from the earthquake. As of now, there have been no reports of damage. Nana explained that while the tremors were felt strongly, especially by residents in coastal areas, causing some panic, there was no excessive self-evacuation, and the situation quickly stabilized. Tagana, along with related agencies, conducted monitoring along the Pangandaran coast and reported that the situation on the ground is secure and under control. In addition to Pangandaran, the earthquake's tremors were also reported in surrounding areas such as Ciamis Regency, Tasikmalaya Regency, Garut Regency, and Bandung Regency.
