Cambodia: Waste Removal from Drainage and Public Appeal to Prevent Flooding

In Serei Saophoan city, Banteay Meanchey province, western Cambodia, swift action by local authorities is addressing drainage system blockages and subsequent flooding that could impact residents' lives. On the 15th, Mr. Seu Hiak, the commune chief of Kampong Svay, along with commune council members, conducted operations to remove garbage that had accumulated and blocked drainage channels due to heavy monsoon rains. This blockage was hindering rainwater flow and causing road flooding. Commune Chief Seu Hiak noted that recent rainfall had led to significant garbage accumulation in the drainage systems, impeding water flow and resulting in road inundation, which could damage infrastructure. He explained that he and his staff had undertaken garbage collection to improve water flow and prevent road flooding and damage to residents. Furthermore, the commune chief urged citizens to properly sort and dispose of their waste. He warned that if garbage is improperly handled and flows into the drainage system with rainwater, it could cause blockages again, negatively affecting vehicle traffic and residents' daily lives.
