China could exploit cuts in US-South Korean exercises, says Teodoro

Teodoro emphasized that the U.S. has provided Manila with definite assurances regarding its commitments under the Mutual Defense Treaty. Speaking in Seoul, Teodoro alluded to the potential for reduced exercises to embolden China's actions, suggesting that shifts in regional military presence could impact the existing balance of power. Furthermore, the Defense Secretary indicated that the submarine acquisition program remains under review and is still a way off from realization. He also expressed doubt that joint energy projects could be separated from sovereignty disputes, implying that territorial issues in the South China Sea could continue to pose significant challenges to economic cooperation.
