New Siem Reap Airport Access Road Project Slated for 2027 Start

Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, has announced plans to commence construction of an access road connecting the new Siem Reap International Airport (Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport), located in Sotr Nikum district, to Siem Reap city in 2027. This road project aims to facilitate travel and boost the tourism sector in the province. In an interview with journalists during a visit to Siem Reap province, Mr. Dy Radou, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap, confirmed that the plan for the road construction from the new airport to Siem Reap city has been approved in principle and is expected to begin construction in 2027. Private sector stakeholders, particularly those in the tourism business, have requested the acceleration of this road project to ensure more efficient connectivity between the new airport and Siem Reap city. Mr. Philip Kao, President of the Siem Reap Tourism Club, stated that if the road construction can commence soon, it will bring significant benefits to the tourism sector. It is expected to reduce travel time and costs for tourists, making journeys between the airport and Siem Reap city more convenient. Furthermore, the development of this new connecting road is expected to help mitigate environmental impacts in addition to improving travel convenience. According to sources from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the road from Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport to Siem Reap city, spanning over 20 kilometers, is currently in the preliminary study phase. Before proceeding to implementation and construction, it must undergo detailed studies and multiple technical procedures. Recently, officials from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport held a meeting to review and discuss the implementation of the road construction project from Siem Reap city directly to Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, with funding anticipated from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The meeting was led by Mr. Khan Mane, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, with the objective of organizing a working group responsible for managing and implementing the road construction project connecting Siem Reap city to the new airport. Regarding the road construction project from Siem Reap city to the new airport, Mr. Phon Rim, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, previously informed Kampuchea Thmey Daily that as the project is still in the preliminary study phase, it has not yet reached the construction implementation stage. "Being in the initial stage requires further detailed study and going through related procedures before the official construction can commence," he added.
