Thai Authorities Release Two Cambodian Fishermen Detained for Illegal Entry

The Koh Kong provincial administration in Cambodia announced on September 7, 2026, that two Cambodian fishermen, who had been detained by Thai authorities for illegal entry, have been released and reunited with their families. The two fishermen were apprehended by Thai authorities on February 22, 2026. Under the direction of Deputy Governor Chea Vaa, and led by the Cambodian government, negotiations and coordination with Thai authorities were carried out to facilitate their release. The fishermen arrived in Cambodia on the morning of September 7 and were able to meet their families. This incident suggests the importance of cooperation and humanitarian considerations between the authorities of both countries in cross-border fishing activities between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodia and Thailand share fishing resources in the Mekong River basin and the Gulf of Thailand, and fishing activities between the two countries have historically been active. However, there are also occasional reports of stricter border controls and troubles between fishermen from both countries over fishing grounds.
