Ho Chi Minh City Extends 'Bonds of Affection' to Con Dao Island - Visit to Southwest Sea Region and DK1/10 Platform

A delegation from Ho Chi Minh City has arrived at Con Dao Island, located approximately 150 nautical miles from the city. This island is a sacred land etched with the memories of generations who sacrificed for Vietnam's independence and freedom. This visit marks the first destination of the "Southwest Sea Region, Islands, and DK1/10 Platform Visit" program for 2026. The delegation participated in a memorial service for heroes and martyrs at Con Dao Island, honoring their contributions. Subsequently, they visited officers, soldiers, and residents stationed on islands in the southwest sea region and at the DK1/10 platform, deepening exchanges. This activity is part of a program titled "Towards the Fatherland's Borders, Seas, and Islands," under which Ho Chi Minh City has received over 55 billion VND in funds. This visit aims to spread the "bonds of affection" between Ho Chi Minh City and frontier regions vital to national defense and development. Ho Chi Minh City also organizes artistic exchange programs to strengthen support for border, sea, and island areas. As a socialist republic, Vietnam maintains a one-party system while prioritizing economic growth. The strategic importance of these sea and island areas is increasing, particularly as territorial disputes in the South China Sea (referred to as the "East Sea" in Vietnam) become more complex. Outposts like Con Dao Island and the DK1/10 platform play a crucial role in maintaining Vietnam's sovereignty and ensuring resource development and navigational safety. This visit is seen as an effort to raise national awareness of these state-level issues and foster solidarity between regions.
