In a statement posted on social media on the evening of July 31, 2026, spokesperson Khien Sonadin stated, "As the spokesperson for the General Department of Prisons, I would like to briefly clarify that the individual named Sam Meichu, as a defendant accused of 'driving causing a traffic accident resulting in the death of another person and fleeing the scene,' is currently detained in Phnom Penh Municipal Prison, in accordance with the detention order issued on July 31, 2026, by the investigating judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court." He further added, "This is unlike some comments made on social media that suggest an irregular process. All prisons across the country strictly adhere to prison procedures regarding the admission and release of any individual, following decisions made by the judicial institutions."
