Cambodia Dispatches ASEAN Observers to Border Area Following Thailand's Unilateral Fence Construction
Cambodia has dispatched ASEAN observers to a border area in Battambang province following alleged unilateral fence construction by Thailand. Cambodia has protested to Thailand, deeming the actions as impacting bilateral procedures and is pushing for an early Joint Border Committee (JBC) meeting.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense announced that on July 6, 2026, Cambodia's Coordination Liaison Group (CLG) facilitated a visit by ASEAN Observers (AOT), led by a mission chief from the Philippines, to inspect, verify, and gather information on the actual situation along border pillars 52 to 59 in Kamrieng district, Battambang province. This observation mission was conducted after notifying the Thai side and with the participation of relevant authorities. During the inspection, the ASEAN Observers examined the actual situation concerning the unilateral construction of a border fence by the Thai military near border pillars 52 to 54. They also observed the breakage of temporary border pillars caused by these activities. After receiving technical information regarding joint measurements and the placement of temporary markers, the ASEAN Observers also inspected areas between border pillars 52 and 59 where Thai citizens were cultivating land within Cambodian territory. The Ministry of National Defense stated that Cambodia has lodged a protest with the Thai side via diplomatic note, considering these actions to be detrimental to the bilateral procedures under the framework of the Joint Border Commission (JBC). Simultaneously, Cambodia is strongly urging for the earliest possible convening of a JBC meeting to resolve the issues through the existing mechanisms. The Ministry emphasized that the purpose of this observation was to allow the ASEAN Observers to witness the real situation in the border area and to demonstrate the Cambodian government's commitment to resolving border issues peacefully through discussions, bilateral mechanisms, international law, and existing agreements.
