Papua Gunman Allegedly Video Called Victim's Family After Fatal Shooting

The perpetrators of the shooting that killed three civil servants (ASN) in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua, allegedly took the mobile phone of one of the deceased victims and made a video call to the victim's family. The content of the video call, reportedly conducted in a local Papuan language, remains unclear, though footage has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred on Wednesday (9/9). The victims were identified as Aprida Rapi, Head of the Animal Husbandry Division at the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Office; Alfonsius Albinus Mehan, a veterinarian at the Health Office; and Willi Mbuik, a civil servant candidate. Kombes Yusuf Sutejo, Head of Public Relations for Operation Damai Cartenz 2026, confirmed that the perpetrators took Willi Mbuik's mobile phone. Irjen Faizal Ramadhani, Chief of Operation Damai Cartenz 2026, also confirmed the video call incident. Footage circulating on social media appears to show Willi Mbuik's family speaking with an individual believed to be one of the shooters. In the video, a family member questions the perpetrator about the motive for shooting his son, while the alleged perpetrator is seen smiling at one point. "The language used was Papuan, so it still needs to be translated," Yusuf stated, indicating the difficulty in understanding the conversation. Police have reportedly obtained the perpetrators' descriptions from witnesses who survived the attack and are currently pursuing the suspects. Evidence collected from the crime scene includes three shell casings—two of 5.56 millimeter caliber, consistent with long firearms, and one of 9 millimeter caliber, typical of handguns—as well as bloodstains. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the Papua region and the brutality of armed criminal groups (KKB). The targeting of civil servants raises concerns about the potential disruption of local governance.
