Cambodia Remains Neutral on ICC Criticism, Emphasizing International Justice Role

Former US President Donald Trump urged nations worldwide to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), labeling it a "demonic and hypocritical institution." Following his appeal, only Nauru has reportedly complied. This move is part of the Trump administration's efforts to reject the Hague-based tribunal, which Washington views as overstepping its jurisdiction, citing instances where the court took action against the United States and Israel, neither of which are signatories to the Rome Statute. In contrast, a number of countries, particularly in Europe, are strengthening their cooperation to defend the ICC, considering it a cornerstone of international justice. The statute establishing the court has been signed by 125 nations. The Dutch Prime Minister stated at the United Nations General Assembly that the court is under attack and facing risks, questioning how serious crimes can be prosecuted and urging against actions that would affect the ICC and international institutions that uphold the rule of law. This statement was met with resounding applause from various national delegations. The United States has imposed financial sanctions on the ICC and suspended visa issuance for its staff, with US government officials reportedly preparing further sanctions that could cripple the ICC's future operations, according to sources familiar with internal US affairs. The European Union is jointly defending the ICC, discussing the creation of a containment treaty to respond to US sanctions. The EU's head of foreign affairs stated that they have options to protect the court and possess "tools in our toolbox" to act when tensions rise. Support for the ICC is being rallied at the United Nations to ensure its continued operation. While the Cambodian government has not issued an official statement on this matter, it has consistently demonstrated a stance that values international law and the role of international institutions. Joining direct criticism of the ICC or movements to reject its participation would not align with Cambodia's foreign policy principles.
