Cambodia and Singapore to Further Strengthen Cooperation in Education, Economy, and Tourism

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng confirmed that Cambodia and Singapore will further enhance their cooperation in education, economic development, health, and tourism. This statement was made during a courtesy call by H.E. Mr. Steven Pang Chee Wee, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Singapore to the Kingdom of Cambodia, at the Phnom Penh City Hall on July 30, 2026. Governor Khuong Sreng noted that the Kingdom of Cambodia was among the first countries to recognize Singapore's independence after its separation from the Federation of Malaysia in 1965. Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Singapore and the Kingdom of Cambodia were established on August 10, 1965, severed in 1975, and re-established on January 18, 1992. The Governor addressed the issue of ONLINE SCAMS, describing it as a complex problem not only for Cambodia but for the entire world. He emphasized that under the strong commitment of Prime Minister Hun Manet, Cambodia is moving towards a "white economy," and Phnom Penh is actively working to eradicate online scam offenses within its territory. Regarding ONLINE SCAMS, Ambassador Steven Pang Chee Wee informed that Singapore is actively cooperating with ASEAN countries, Japan, South Korea, and South Africa in combating these criminal activities. For Cambodia, Singapore has provided training to numerous police officers specializing in these operations. The Ambassador expressed a strong commitment to continue fully cooperating with the Cambodian government and the Phnom Penh administration on this matter. Ambassador Steven Pang Chee Wee reiterated that both countries will elevate their cooperative relations to a higher level, encompassing education, economic development, health, and tourism. He pointed out that the current four daily flights between Singapore and Cambodia reflect the vibrancy of people-to-people exchanges. Furthermore, Ambassador Steven Pang Chee Wee described Cambodia as a "colorful" country, a significant attraction for tourists. He noted that while previously only Angkor Wat was widely known, Cambodia now boasts numerous attractive tourist destinations and a diverse cuisine. Singaporean media have widely reported on Cambodia's attractions, and the Ambassador himself has actively promoted Cambodia's positive aspects, such as security, investment appeal, and tourism, to Singapore. The Ambassador highlighted that safety is the primary concern for businessmen and investors. He assured them that Phnom Penh and Cambodia are peaceful and secure, citing the diligent efforts of the Cambodian government and Phnom Penh authorities, particularly in cracking down on and cleaning up technology-based fraud like ONLINE SCAMS.
