Cambodia, China Energy Firm Discuss Clean Energy Cooperation
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with Qiao Xubin, Chairman of China Energy International Group, in Beijing. The Chinese firm expressed interest in expanding investments into renewable energy and infrastructure. Cambodia aims to reach 70% renewable energy by 2030.
AKP Phnom Penh, July 16, 2026 — China Energy International Group Co. has expressed strong interest in expanding its investment footprint in Cambodia into new sectors, including renewable energy and infrastructure. The interest was conveyed by Mr. Qiao Xubin, Chairman of China Energy International Group, during a courtesy call with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet in Beijing on Wednesday. Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet is currently visiting China to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, scheduled from July 15-17. During the meeting, Mr. Qiao briefed the Cambodian Prime Minister on the company's current operations in Cambodia, which initially focused on engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for major power infrastructure projects. Looking forward, Mr. Qiao noted that the company aims to diversify its portfolio in the Southeast Asian nation by investing in new fields, such as cement production, water treatment, and renewable energy. In response, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the company's expansion plans, emphasising that clean energy development remains a top priority for his administration. The Prime Minister highlighted that Cambodia already sources approximately 62 percent of its electricity from renewable energy and aims to push that figure to 70 percent by 2030. He added that Cambodia is keen on adopting advanced technologies to optimise and upgrade the efficiency of its existing power grid. Samdech Hun Manet reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to supporting foreign investors and encouraged China Energy to work closely with relevant Cambodian ministries to ensure the success of its upcoming projects.
