Cambodian Agriculture Boosts Weather Forecasting Skills with Chinese Study Program

Four Cambodian students have embarked on their studies in China after receiving scholarships from the PEARL project, which is financially supported by the Green Climate Fund of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The students will pursue advanced degrees in meteorology for agriculture and agrohydrometeorology at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST). This scholarship initiative is instrumental in cultivating a new generation of Cambodian experts proficient in improving weather forecasting, disseminating meteorological information, and providing agricultural advice to farmers. Their return is expected to significantly benefit farmers by equipping them with advance knowledge of weather conditions, thereby aiding crucial decisions on planting times, crop types, water management, and pest control, ultimately mitigating losses from droughts, heavy rainfall, and other climate-related risks. Upon completion of their studies, these graduates will also contribute to the 'Cambodian Agricultural Meteorological Services,' a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and the FAO. This service provides specific weather information and guidance tailored to individual crops, empowering farmers to make better-informed decisions amidst evolving weather patterns.
