Cambodia: 26km Rural Road Upgrade to Facilitate Agricultural Product Transport

In Cambodia's western Banteay Meanchey province, a rural road renovation and construction project covering 26.3 kilometers is underway as part of efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure. The initiative aims to enable farmers to transport their agricultural products to market quickly and at a lower cost, and is considered an essential element for revitalizing the local economy. The road, spanning across the Mongkol Borei and Malai districts, connects Chomnoam Kietu village in Chomnoam commune to Balloung village in Ta Kong commune along Say Samon Road. It will be developed with a 7-meter wide, 0.2-meter thick crushed stone mixed roadbed, and will also feature the construction of one circular culvert and one box culvert. As of September 14, 2026, the project is approximately 45% complete. This road development initiative was emphasized by H.E. Du Dalito, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Rural Development, during his inspection visit. H.E. Du Dalito explained that good road networks not only facilitate farmers' mobility but also contribute to reducing transportation costs and maintaining the quality of agricultural products, ultimately leading to increased income for farmers. This reflects the government's recognition that rural development is directly linked to the promotion of the agricultural sector and, consequently, to the development of the overall rural economy. Banteay Meanchey province is a region with significant agricultural potential, and a quality rural road network is crucial for connecting production areas with markets. The road improvements are expected to facilitate not only the transport of agricultural products but also the movement of residents, the provision of public services, and the strengthening of inter-community connections. Accompanying the inspection, Mr. Chea Yutharoth, Director of the Provincial Department of Rural Development, confirmed that the construction is progressing according to plan and technical standards.
