Koh Nhek District Authorities Urge High Alert as Water Levels Rise

Authorities in Koh Nhek District, Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia, have issued a high alert to residents living along rivers, streams, and canals due to rising water levels from recent continuous rainfall. Mr. Sey Touch, the district governor, told "Kampuchea Thmey" on the afternoon of September 10th that the district's unified command committee is closely monitoring the flood situation, especially the continuous rainfall during the rainy season, to ensure timely operations in case of natural disasters. According to Mr. Sey Touch, this attention is at the directive of Mr. Kong Kimny, the Governor of Mondulkiri Province, who continues to monitor the well-being of citizens residing along rivers, streams, canals, and lakes. This period is the rainy season with frequent rainfall, which can cause flash floods to rise rapidly. The district governor affirmed that in the event of a major disaster, as the district administration and head of the Koh Nhek District Unified Command, in cooperation with the district police force and gendarmerie, a total of 80 personnel will be deployed along with rescue equipment such as boats, canoes, life jackets, and other materials to conduct timely operations in case of natural disasters, ensuring no citizen suffers from natural disaster-induced flooding. Mr. Sey Touch stated that as local authorities, they have instructed residents to regularly follow weather information and notifications from the authorities. They are also advised to prepare preventive measures in advance to protect their lives, property, and livestock if water levels rise rapidly or flash floods occur unexpectedly. Furthermore, he urged guardians to closely supervise their children, preventing them from playing in the water or crossing areas with strong currents, as this could endanger their lives at any time. This appeal comes as water levels in the Sre Pok River and several other streams and canals in Koh Nhek District continue to rise, requiring all residents to exercise high vigilance and cooperate with local authorities for a timely response should natural disaster situations arise.
