Heavy Rainfall Floods Government Offices in Banteay Meanchey, Residents Prepare for Evacuation

In Serei Sophoan City, Banteay Meanchey Province, a significant amount of rainfall from the night of September 23rd has led to flooding in several key government institutions. The affected buildings include the provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (located adjacent to each other), the Serei Sophoan City Hall, and the City Police Inspectorate. According to Mr. Sreng Sophal, Governor of Serei Sophoan City, the two departments experienced severe flooding, with water levels reaching knee-high within their premises. Officials had to park their cars and motorcycles outside the compound and wade through the water to reach their offices. Fortunately, no serious damage to public property has been reported thus far. The governor attributed the flooding to excessive rainfall overwhelming the drainage system's capacity. He indicated that if no further rain occurs, the water is expected to recede naturally within a day. Authorities are also preparing for potential resident evacuations. Approximately five to six families in Prey Ruessei village, Preah Pola commune, are on standby for relocation to safer, elevated ground. The weather in Serei Sophoan City remains overcast with intermittent light rain. The water level of the Serei Sophoan River has reached 6.46 meters, below the 7.50-meter alert level, but authorities and residents are urged to maintain high vigilance.
