Phnom Penh District Improves Drainage System to Alleviate Flooding

The Tuol Rak 3 commune in Phnom Penh's Tuol Kork district has installed a new 140-meter drainage system to resolve long-standing issues of flooding and traffic congestion for its residents. The project was completed on the afternoon of August 31, 2026. The new drainage system is located along Street 186, near the intersection with Streets 247 and 253, aiming to prevent water accumulation and blockage during rainfall. Sokun (pseudonym), a resident in the area, stated that in the past, roads would flood after rain due to the old, small drainage system's inability to handle the water flow promptly. This led to stagnant water, foul odors, and impacted daily commutes, business activities, as well as hygiene and health in the community. Nou Pheakdey, the Deputy Chief of Tuol Rak 3 commune, explained that the drainage system installation is part of the commune/district fund development project for 2026, aimed at improving local infrastructure. He highlighted that the project directly addresses the essential needs of the residents. The Deputy Chief further mentioned that the new drainage system spans approximately 140 meters from the intersection of Streets 247 to 253. Based on technical specifications and bidding processes, the project is planned for expansion to villages 6, 11, 13, 4, and 5. He added that any remaining funds after the bidding process will be used to extend the construction of roads and drainage systems further, benefiting a wider population. This infrastructure development reflects Cambodia's progress in urban development and efforts to enhance the quality of life for its citizens. It serves as an example of local authorities undertaking infrastructure projects in response to community demands.
