Vietnam Calls for Peaceful Resolution to Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute, Emphasizes ASEAN Conflict Avoidance

Vietnam has expressed its hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, emphasizing the need to avoid conflict among fellow ASEAN member states. The remarks were made during an official visit to Vietnam by Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary, from July 27 to 29, where the issue was discussed among senior leaders. Vietnamese officials reaffirmed their commitment to regional peace and security, stating, "As a neighboring country and a fellow ASEAN member, Vietnam does not wish to see conflicts among ASEAN member states or any developments that threaten regional peace, stability and development." This sentiment underscores Vietnam's position on maintaining stability within the bloc, particularly given the historical tensions between Cambodia and Thailand over border demarcation. Cambodia, in turn, reiterated its foreign policy of peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law and rejected the use of force to alter internationally recognized borders. During her visit, Sudary held meetings with Vietnam's top leadership, including Communist Party General Secretary and President To Lam, National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man, and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung. Both sides agreed that strengthening cooperation between neighbors not only contributes to their own development but also to peace and prosperity across the region. The discussions also focused on expanding bilateral ties in areas such as trade, infrastructure, security, education, healthcare, and parliamentary relations.
