Vietnam Enhances ASEAN Role, Bridges Interests Amidst Domestic Reforms

Vietnam is increasingly solidifying its role as a regional coordinator, bridging diverse interests among ASEAN member states and strengthening solidarity. Collins Chong Yew Keat, a foreign affairs, security, and strategy analyst at the University of Malaya, notes that Vietnam's capacity to build common platforms among members has become more critical than ever amidst escalating geopolitical shifts. Its role as a bridge connecting countries with varying development levels and strategic relationships with major powers is particularly significant. To foster a resilient and sustainable "blue economy" in the region, Vietnam has proposed scaling up energy cooperation, pooling financial resources, and cracking down on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The country also underscores the importance of maintaining peace and stability and upholding international law in the East Sea, urging relevant parties to respect sovereign rights and jurisdiction within their exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and continental shelves. Domestically, Vietnam is vigorously pursuing administrative reforms. Over a year into its sweeping administrative restructuring, the country has streamlined its governance system, reduced intermediate layers, and clarified the functions, responsibilities, and authorities of state agencies. The role of grassroots authorities has also been strengthened. These reforms are expected to enhance the nation's overall resilience and contribute to strengthening Vietnamese diplomacy in a new era of development. Furthermore, Vietnam is prioritizing scientific and technological advancements, particularly in areas like next-generation gene sequencing technologies for identifying the remains of fallen soldiers. This indicates Vietnam's potential to enhance its contributions not only to domestic problem-solving but also to international cooperation. Vietnam views the United States as one of its leading important partners and holds significant expectations for further development of bilateral relations. The country also sees the ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, South Korea) framework as a strategic platform for deepening regional economic integration and intends to strengthen its role within it.
