Cambodia Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Logging in Preah Rung National Park
Cambodia is intensifying its crackdown on illegal logging within the Preah Rung National Park in Kampong Thom Province. The Commander of the Kampong Thom Provincial Military Operations Area, also the permanent vice-chairman of the provincial natural resources crime prevention committee, has issued strict orders to on-site forces to prevent renewed deforestation. Supplies of food and fuel were also provided.
In Cambodia's northeastern region, specifically within the Preah Rung National Park in Kampong Thom Province, efforts to combat illegal logging and deforestation are being intensified. On July 15, 2026, Major General Som Son, Commander of the Kampong Thom Provincial Military Operations Area and permanent vice-chairman of the provincial committee for the prevention, suppression, and eradication of natural resource crimes, issued strict orders to the joint forces tasked with combating illegal logging in the area. Major General Som Son visited the field command posts in the Trapaing Pruos and Ou Doung areas, located on the border between Kampong Thom and Kratie provinces. He engaged with the joint forces stationed there, aiming to boost their morale and provide directives for their crucial mission of preventing and combating natural resource crimes. He also delivered essential supplies, including food, daily necessities, and fuel, to the troops. Major General Som Son commended the joint forces at the Trapaing Pruos and Ou Doung field command posts for their diligent work and high sense of responsibility. These forces are actively engaged in patrols and surveillance to prevent any new instances of forest encroachment within the Preah Rung National Park. Regarding past illegal logging incidents in the Ou Kang and Ou Doung areas, the joint forces have managed the situation effectively, preventing destruction by fire or conversion for agricultural purposes. They are maintaining vigilant surveillance for any signs of resurgence by past loggers and have established procedures to apprehend suspects and transfer them to judicial authorities for legal prosecution. The Major General reiterated his firm directive to the joint forces to absolutely prevent any further illegal logging within the jurisdiction of the Preah Rung National Park, which spans across Kampong Thom and Kratie provinces. He mandated regular patrols and thorough inspections, ordering the immediate apprehension of offenders caught in the act and their transfer to relevant institutions for legal proceedings. The policy emphasizes zero tolerance for such crimes. During the visit, the joint forces received donations from His Excellency Noun Pharat, Governor of Kampong Thom Province and Chairman of the Provincial Administrative Unity Command. The aid included 200 kilograms of rice, 8 cases of instant noodles, 300 liters of gasoline, beverages, and other daily necessities.
