Laos Joins Treaty of Amity and Cooperation 50th Anniversary Events, Reinforces Security Cooperation

Laos participated in events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), a key framework for promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in the region, alongside other member states. The treaty now has 62 states parties, underscoring its growing role. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane led the Lao delegation to the High-Level Meeting of the States Parties to the TAC, held on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila. Discussions at the meeting covered conflict prevention, preventive diplomacy, maritime security cooperation, and emerging regional challenges including transnational crime, online scams, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and disaster response. The Lao delegation delivered a statement during the session on addressing emerging threats, reaffirming Laos' commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in tackling shared security challenges. Participants emphasized the enduring importance of the TAC as a cornerstone of ASEAN's regional architecture, reaffirming its fundamental principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful settlement of disputes, renunciation of the threat or use of force, and cooperation for regional development. Ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to resolving differences through dialogue and strengthening cooperation to promote lasting peace, security, and sustainable development across the region. In addition to this diplomatic engagement, Laos has been actively pursuing various bilateral relations, including an agricultural visit to Vietnam by its Minister of Agriculture and Environment, bilateral consultations with Singapore, and a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister. These activities demonstrate Laos' efforts to maintain and strengthen its diverse diplomatic ties. While Laos, under its one-party system, prioritizes relations with China and Vietnam, these engagements also highlight its pursuit of broader regional and international cooperation. Economically, the country faces challenges in infrastructure development and attracting investment, making these diplomatic endeavors crucial for economic growth.
