Cambodia Military Chief Reaffirms Peaceful Border Resolution with ASEAN Observers

PHNOM PENH, Sept 24, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s military chief has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to resolving border disputes peacefully, as he met ASEAN observers from Malaysia and Singapore who have completed their mission in Cambodia. General Vong Pisen, Commander‑in‑Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, held talks with the officers in Phnom Penh on Sept 23. He thanked the governments and armed forces of Malaysia and Singapore for contributing personnel to the ASEAN Observer Team, praising their professionalism, neutrality and transparency in carrying out duties along the Cambodia–Thailand frontier. The ASEAN Observer Team has been conducting on‑site inspections and documenting incidents in sensitive border areas. Vong Pisen said Cambodia had facilitated the mission’s work, including allowing observers to conduct inspections when irregular incidents occurred. He described the mission as significant for ASEAN, noting its role in helping address disputes between member states. He acknowledged the challenges and sensitivity of field operations but said Cambodia’s own history of conflict had reinforced its determination to maintain peace. The commander stressed Cambodia had no intention of invading another country’s territory or going to war, and reiterated support for ASEAN solidarity, unity and centrality. He underlined that border issues must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law. The meeting marked the conclusion of the Malaysian and Singaporean observers’ mission, part of ASEAN’s broader effort to monitor tensions and build confidence between Cambodia and Thailand.
