Koh Sralao Island Advances Carbon Neutrality Vision with Enhanced Environmental Conservation

Koh Sralao, designated to become Cambodia’s first carbon-neutral island, has taken another step towards sustainable development with a recent tour by environmental specialists. The initiative aims to exchange knowledge and best practices on community waste management and marine conservation, with the goal of preventing marine litter and strengthening environmental protection efforts. The six-day tour, from July 13 to 18, visited the Koh Trong community in Kratie province, focusing on community-based solid waste management integrated with ecotourism, local governance, and community participation. Participants explored practical approaches adaptable for waste management and environmental awareness programs in Koh Sralao village. According to a July 22 statement from German state development agency GIZ Cambodia, the visit was designed to support the island’s transformation into a model carbon-neutral island and an innovation hub for tackling marine waste along Cambodia’s coastline. Key lessons learned included the establishment of community waste banks and zero-waste management systems modeled on Koh Trong’s experience, household composting to reduce organic waste, and the development of homestays and tree-planting initiatives to generate additional income for local residents. Mechanisms to encourage tourists’ direct contribution to conservation efforts, practical approaches for implementing a community solid waste management plan, and strategies for strengthening community cooperation and shared responsibility for environmental protection were also examined. The delegation comprised representatives from the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Tourism, the Koh Kong provincial administration, local authorities from Koh Kapi commune, and members of the Koh Sralao community. The program was supported by the ASEAN-Germany Cooperation Project – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Protect Marine Environment and Coral Reefs (3RproMar II), funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ Cambodia in partnership with the environment ministry. Located in Koh Kong province, the island is home to over 300 households. The environment ministry designated it as Cambodia’s model carbon-neutral island and a regional example in March this year. The carbon-neutral initiative focuses on developing resilient infrastructure and encouraging active participation from all stakeholders, particularly local communities, to strengthen environmental conservation while promoting sustainable green development along Cambodia’s coastline. As part of the long-term plan to transform Koh Sralao, the ministry has outlined priority measures including restoring degraded mangrove forests and tropical woodlands, constructing climate-resilient infrastructure, promoting green technologies, and encouraging the use of solar-powered and other renewable energy transport systems. The strategy also includes strengthening solid waste management through waste separation and disposal, discouraging open burning of waste without guidance from relevant authorities, developing environmentally friendly tourism infrastructure and eco-tourism products, and promoting climate-smart agriculture. Together, these initiatives aim to preserve Koh Sralao’s natural environment while supporting sustainable livelihoods and positioning the island as a model for green coastal development.
