Sumatra Schools in 3 Cities Shift to Online Learning Due to Haze

Severe haze has impacted educational activities in parts of Indonesia's Sumatra island. According to CNN Indonesia reports, schools in three cities on the island have temporarily shifted from in-person classes to online learning (PJJ: Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh). This measure prioritizes the health and safety of students amid worsening air pollution. The haze is often caused by agricultural and forest fires (hotspots) and tends to worsen during the dry season. Similar health impacts and disruptions to educational activities due to haze have been reported in Sumatra in the past, posing a serious issue for local residents. While the transition to online learning aims to ensure continuity of educational opportunities, it also presents new challenges such as internet access at home and parental support systems.
