Laos' Deputy Minister reaffirmed the nation's commitment to sustainable urban development at a UN mid-term review summit. The country highlighted three key priorities: expanding integrated urban planning under the 'One City, One Plan' principle, strengthening public-private partnerships, and improving housing and infrastructure.
Laos has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to sustainable urban development at the mid-term review of the New Urban Agenda summit organized by the United Nations. The nation presented Laos' progress in urban development, aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) on sustainable cities and communities. Mr. Ngamprasong, leading the Lao delegation, shared the country's specific initiatives and achievements in urban development and participated in discussions on sustainable urbanization, infrastructure development, and strategies for managing rapid urban growth. Delegates exchanged views on accelerating the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, strengthening monitoring and data collection, expanding international cooperation, integrating urban development with the SDGs, and addressing the impact of global crises on cities and communities. At the summit, Laos clearly outlined its commitment to promoting sustainable urban development by highlighting three key priorities: 1. Expanding integrated urban planning under the principle of "One City, One Plan." 2. Strengthening public-private partnerships to mobilize investment and financing for sustainable urban development. 3. Improving housing, urban governance, and resilient infrastructure, particularly in rapidly growing small towns. The Lao delegation reiterated its pledge to work closely with UN member states to promote sustainable, inclusive, resilient, and modern urban development. This stance reflects Laos' approach to achieving sustainable growth through international cooperation amidst the challenges of economic development and consequent urbanization. The one-party government of Laos is focused on promoting domestic infrastructure and economic growth, while valuing support from development partners, and this statement at the UN conference is seen as part of that broader strategy.
