Thai Government Considers Extending 'Thai Helps Thai Plus' Amid Public Demand

The 'Thai Helps Thai Plus' 60/40 project, a key initiative by the Thai government, has received significant public acclaim for its effectiveness in alleviating living costs and stimulating the grassroots economy over the past four months. A Super Poll survey indicated that 63.8% of the public are highly satisfied with the measure, recognizing its genuine impact on reducing household expenses and boosting local businesses. The government reported that accumulated spending through the program has reached over 138 billion baht, benefiting more than 1.19 million vendors. Reflecting this positive reception, there are growing calls from citizens and business owners alike for the project to be extended, particularly as a New Year's gift amidst high inflation and a rising cost of living. Jernjira Kongthong, President of the Nakhon Ratchasima Chamber of Industry, acknowledged the project's success in directly stimulating spending, especially within communities and among small retailers. She emphasized the need for continued support beyond the current September 30th deadline, suggesting that long-term measures to enhance business sustainability should complement short-term consumption stimulus. However, the government, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, has stated that any decision on extension is contingent on financial availability. "We need to look at our pockets and see where the funds can come from," he remarked, indicating a cautious approach pending a review of the national budget. Experts recommend that while the project has effectively supported the economy and boosted purchasing power in the short term, the government should simultaneously consider measures to build long-term economic resilience and capacity. The upcoming period after September 30th will be critical in determining whether the grassroots and community economies, which have gained momentum from 'Thai Helps Thai Plus,' can maintain their drive or revert to a state of sluggishness.
