Vietnam, China Boost Strategic Cooperation Amid Regional Dynamics

Vietnam and China have agreed to strengthen their cooperation to further develop bilateral relations. During their meeting, Vietnamese Minister of National Defence Ngo Xuan Lich and Chinese Minister of National Defence Wei Fenghe agreed to continue seriously and effectively implementing important common perceptions reached by the top leaders of the two Parties and countries. The meeting emphasized promoting the strategic guiding role of high-level exchanges and advancing the building of the Vietnam-China Community with a shared future that carries strategic significance in an increasingly practical and profound manner in accordance with the “six major orientations”. This agreement comes shortly after Vietnam proposed three priorities to advance ASEAN–China relations and China expressed its readiness to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN. The recent commencement of a friendship visit by a Vietnamese naval vessel to China also indicates the intensification of military exchanges between the two nations. Under its one-party system, Vietnam prioritizes economic growth while pursuing a foreign policy that emphasizes geopolitical balance. Relations with China, particularly concerning the South China Sea, are strategically vital for Vietnam, requiring careful navigation between economic dependence and security concerns. This agreement is seen as reflecting Vietnam's intention to build trust and manage its relationship with China, which aims to expand its regional influence, in a more stable manner.
