US Boosts Biofertilizer Exports to Vietnam, Supporting Sustainable Agriculture

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) has announced funding for a technical assistance program aimed at promoting the adoption of biofertilizers and sustainable agricultural practices in Vietnam. According to a notice issued on August 4, FAS is inviting U.S. universities, agricultural trade associations, and non-profit organizations to apply for this program. The initiative seeks to evaluate crop yields and reductions in nitrogen leaching using U.S.-manufactured biofertilizers, such as liquid fish fertilizer, in both the United States and Vietnam. This support is expected to be welcomed by Vietnam amidst global fertilizer supply tightness and a recent trend of increasing domestic fertilizer exports. Vietnam has been increasingly focused on balancing agricultural productivity gains with reduced environmental impact, leading to growing interest in biofertilizers as a means to decrease reliance on chemical fertilizers. This technical assistance from the U.S. can be seen as part of Vietnam's efforts to modernize its agricultural policies under its one-party system and enhance food security. While Vietnam has strong economic ties with China, it is also deepening its relationship with the U.S., and cooperation in areas like this aligns with Vietnam's economic diversification strategy.
