Statement released on Martyrs’ Day, Women Political Prisoners Organization pays tribute to martyrs

July 19, 2026 Mizzima. On the occasion of the 79th Martyrs’ Day, the Women Political Prisoners Organization (WOPP) released a statement titled “Paying Tribute to the Martyrs” today (July 19). It is understood that the statement was issued with the aim of commemorating and paying tribute to General Aung San and the martyred leaders who fell on July 19, 1947. The Women Political Prisoners Organization stated that it respects and honors the sacrifices and dedications of the martyrs, and suggested that the historical contributions of those who sacrificed their lives for independence, democracy, and human rights should not be forgotten. On the 79th Martyrs’ Day, which falls today, Myanmar organizations both within the country and abroad, revolutionary forces, and Myanmar communities also held ceremonies to commemorate and honor the martyred leaders and those who fell during the Spring Revolution. General Aung San and the leaders of the government cabinet were assassinated on July 19, 1947, and this day is designated and observed annually as Martyrs’ Day in Myanmar.
