Phu Quoc Leverages OCOP to Globalize Local Delicacies

Phu Quoc, renowned as one of Vietnam's premier island destinations, is actively leveraging its "One Commune, One Product" (OCOP) program to transform its traditional specialties into internationally recognized goods. This initiative aims to foster sustainable economic growth by integrating local agriculture, food processing, and tourism. The OCOP program is part of a rural development strategy promoted by the Vietnamese government, seeking to enhance the market competitiveness of local specialties by capitalizing on unique regional resources and traditional techniques. In Phu Quoc, this program facilitates the development and branding of island-specific agricultural and marine products, as well as their processed goods, through improvements in quality control and design, for both domestic and international markets. For instance, processed products such as Phu Quoc fish sauce, pepper, and mangoes are gaining consumer trust, not just among tourists but also a broader audience, by being certified under OCOP, which guarantees their quality and regional authenticity. This is helping them establish themselves as genuine food brands rather than mere tourist souvenirs. This strategy significantly contributes to revitalizing the local economy. Farmers and fishermen secure stable income sources, while food processing businesses create new employment opportunities. Furthermore, the stories and production backgrounds of these specialties are utilized as tourism content, driving more visitors to the island. This exemplifies how regional development policies, pursued under Vietnam's single-party system, are translated into tangible economic activities. Moreover, the OCOP program provides opportunities to participate in international events, serving as a stepping stone for Phu Quoc's specialties to gain recognition in the global market. Ahead of hosting APEC 2027, Phu Quoc is enhancing the capabilities of tourism-related workers, including English language training, to better serve international clientele, alongside advancing the OCOP program. Through these efforts, Phu Quoc aims to evolve from a mere resort destination into a region with competitive industries that are integrated and capable of competing in the international arena.
