Thai MP demanding peace removed during Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Thai Parliament

A Thai opposition People’s Party MP who chanted demands “for peace and humanity” during a visit by Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing to the Thai Parliament was removed from the venue by parliamentary security. The incident occurred 7 August as Senate Speaker Mongkol Surasajja was preparing to welcome Min Aung Hlaing as a special guest at the Thai Parliament, part of his broader two-day state visit to Thailand that began 6 August. Bangkok MP Anusorn Thamjai arrived at the reception area before the ceremony began, intending to submit a letter addressed to Min Aung Hlaing through the Senate Speaker. The letter reportedly urged action on resolving cross-border issues, providing humanitarian assistance, and rebuilding democracy in Myanmar. Around 10:50 AM, as Min Aung Hlaing’s delegation arrived, Anusorn repeatedly chanted, “For peace, for humanity,” prompting security personnel to intervene and parliamentary police to escort him from the premises. The visit is Min Aung Hlaing’s first to Thailand since formally assuming the “presidency” in April, following elections widely dismissed internationally as a “sham”. During the visit, he met Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at Government House, where the two governments signed memorandums of understanding covering Myanmar migrant workers, water quality management for rivers shared by the two countries, and space technology for earth observation. Rights group Justice For Myanmar has criticized the visit, saying it lends “false legitimacy” to Min Aung Hlaing and the ruling generals.
