Four Suspects Detained for Impersonating Police, Allegedly Extorting Money

Four men have been temporarily detained by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on suspicion of impersonating police officers and attempting to extort money from citizens. The incident occurred around 11 PM on January 21, 2026, at the intersection of Russian Federation Boulevard and Stop 2004 in Kakap 1 Sangkat, Pou Senchey District, Phnom Penh. According to sources, the suspects wore uniforms similar to those of police officers and operated at night. However, their suspicious activities were noticed by real police officers, leading to their arrest on the spot. At the time of their apprehension, they were found in possession of police radios and other related items, which have been confiscated as evidence. This case highlights concerns regarding the credibility of law enforcement agencies and the assurance of citizen safety in Cambodia. Crimes committed by individuals impersonating public officials can instill fear among the public and underscore challenges in maintaining public order. The suspects are currently in custody awaiting further investigation and legal proceedings. Authorities are reportedly planning to strengthen measures to prevent the recurrence of similar crimes.
