Vietnam's Top Leader Meets Major US Firms, Discusses Economic Cooperation and Regional Stability

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam met with leaders of major US corporations in New York, discussing the promotion of economic cooperation and contributions to peace and stability in the region. These meetings were held in parallel with his attendance at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Representatives from the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC), JPMorgan Chase, and Visa, among others, participated in the discussions. General Secretary To Lam emphasized that quality legislation, effective oversight, and timely and sound policy decisions by elected representatives are essential for Vietnam to meet the nation's development needs in the new era. He also stated that the National Assembly and People’s Councils should be bodies of reform, action, effectiveness, and connection to the people. This US trip is positioned as part of Vietnam's diplomatic strategy to strengthen relations with the international community, especially major economies. Vietnam is pursuing a multi-faceted approach to gain international trust while maintaining economic growth under its one-party system. In particular, strengthening economic ties with the US holds significant importance for Vietnam in balancing its diplomacy and economy, especially amidst the complex relationship with China. Furthermore, General Secretary To Lam met with UN Secretary-General Guterres and witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents between Vietnam and the UN. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang also met with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, affirming the UN's support for Vietnam's stronger engagement in peacekeeping operations. These actions strongly demonstrate Vietnam's commitment to contributing to global peace and stability. Vietnam is pursuing a foreign policy that balances domestic political stability with international cooperation, prioritizing economic growth. The top-level diplomacy in the US is expected to influence Vietnam's future economic policies and external relations as part of this strategy.
