Vietnam, Thailand Parliamentary Leaders Pledge Closer Cooperation

Vietnam's National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and Thai House Speaker Chuan Leekpai agreed to further strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. Hue stated that the visit of the Thai parliamentary leader will inject fresh momentum into parliamentary cooperation. He highlighted the special significance of the visit coinciding with the 50th founding anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand, which falls on August 6, 2026. Following the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May last year, enhanced cooperation at the parliamentary level is expected to play a crucial role in materializing this partnership. As a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam emphasizes regional solidarity and stability. Strengthening ties with Thailand aims to enhance Vietnam's influence in the region while deepening economic connections. Under Vietnam's one-party system, foreign policy is carefully determined by the Party and state leadership, and strengthening relations with neighboring countries is part of a strategy to maintain economic growth and improve its standing in the international community. In particular, reinforcing cooperation within ASEAN is essential for expanding Vietnam's diplomatic options, especially given its complex relationship with China. Deeper parliamentary cooperation with Thailand is expected to promote information exchange and mutual understanding, contributing to the further expansion of economic and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
