Russia Begins 3-Day Parliamentary Election Amid Ukraine War

Voting began on September 18 in Russia's far eastern regions, marking the start of a three-day parliamentary election. This is the first general election held since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine commenced in February 2022. Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia party is widely expected to secure a victory amid the ongoing conflict. The election aims to select 450 new members of parliament, with voting scheduled to conclude on September 20. Initial results are anticipated shortly after the polls close. Notably, voting is also being conducted in Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia. Several parties are participating in the parliamentary election, including United Russia, the Communist Party, nationalist parties, A Just Russia – For Truth, and the New People party.
