Cambodia Reports 13% Increase in Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation Cases in First Half of 2026

The Ministry of Interior of Cambodia has reported a 13% increase in the number of human trafficking and sexual exploitation cases during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. From January to June 2026, the Department of Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection, in collaboration with the National Police and the National Military Police, investigated and cracked down on 112 cases of human trafficking and sexual exploitation, rescuing 581 victims (333 females). This represents a 13.13% increase from the first half of 2025. The National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking (NCCHT) stated that human trafficking is no longer a traditional or isolated offense but has become increasingly complex and deeply intertwined with other serious crimes. Criminals are employing sophisticated expertise, cunning tactics, and extensive networks, utilizing advanced technology to easily deceive and lure victims, making it difficult to gather evidence or conduct arrests. The NCCHT has called for the investigation of effective initiatives and methodologies for prevention and deterrence, emphasizing that responses should not be reactive after crimes occur. It also demands enhanced capabilities and support for active and responsible officials, while urging strict disciplinary action against any officials who continue to undermine the efforts of law enforcement at all levels, causing harm to citizens and the nation. During a recent meeting to review the work results of the first half of 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, who also chairs the NCCHT, instructed the multi-sectoral authorities to intensify their efforts in investigating and combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
