Sungai Gelam Community Learns Early Fire Detection Amidst Dry Season

In Air Merah village, Sungai Gelam, Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province, Indonesia, residents are undergoing training for early fire detection and initial suppression amidst the escalating threat of forest fires with the onset of the dry season. During the dry season, particularly in August, the peatlands were bone dry with no rainfall. Tahang (53), while transporting pineapples by motorcycle, noticed faint smoke in the distance. Initially dismissed as a small fire, it rapidly spread within hours, igniting the peatlands. "The fire exploded and became huge," Tahang recounted. He immediately contacted the local cooperative and joined firefighting efforts. However, due to the dry conditions, water access was poor. Despite the tireless efforts of approximately 300 personnel, including residents and firefighters, the fire spread over a kilometer. This experience has underscored the importance of early fire detection and initial suppression in the region. With support from Manggala Agni (Forest Fire Brigade) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), residents are learning to identify early signs of fire and acquire skills for extinguishing them in their initial stages. This is a proactive initiative by the local community to prevent a recurrence of past devastating fires. Forest fires, especially peatland fires, have been a severe annual problem in Indonesia during the dry season. They are a major contributor to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, significantly impacting the regional economy.
