Australian Ex-Tenant Allegedly Trashes Chiang Mai Rental Home, Owner Faces Devastation

A homeowner in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is facing significant financial losses after an Australian tenant allegedly trashed her rental property, causing extensive damage estimated to be over 100,000 baht. Ms. Uthumporn Sommai, 40, leased her house in the Hang Dong district to an Australian national named Mark in March 2026. Almost immediately, neighbors began lodging complaints about disturbances caused by the tenant. Due to these ongoing issues, Ms. Uthumporn decided to terminate the lease agreement early. The tenant agreed to vacate the property. However, upon inspection, Ms. Uthumporn discovered shocking destruction both inside and outside the house. Four security cameras were destroyed, a bedroom door was smashed off its hinges, and a 40-square-meter area of flooring sustained severe damage. Outside, an entire row of trees had been cut down. The interior was equally devastated. A sofa was burned, built-in furniture had swollen due to water damage, walls were covered in stains, and an expensive table was broken. The Australian tenant also left behind unpaid water and electricity bills and allegedly stole valuable collectible liquor bottles and glasses before fleeing. Ms. Uthumporn had to cover the costs of extensive cleaning and air conditioning repairs out of her own pocket. Her attempts to contact the tenant for compensation were ignored, with the tenant refusing to pay for any of the damages. Gathering all her evidence, Ms. Uthumporn filed a formal complaint at the Hang Dong Police Station. Police Lieutenant Colonel Wallapa Moonmuang has officially recorded the case for criminal investigation, and officers are preparing to summon the Australian tenant for questioning and legal proceedings.
