Mizoram Chief Minister urges Chin revolutionary forces to unite

Lalduhoma, the Chief Minister of Mizoram State in India, has urged Chin revolutionary forces to unite, warning that the Myanmar-India border areas could fall back under the control of the Myanmar military junta if they fail to achieve unity. The Chief Minister made these remarks on 25 July during the “Joint Hnampual Meet 2026” event held in Mizoram, which was attended by students from seven ethnic tribes. He also expressed concern over the Myanmar military junta’s territorial expansion in Chin State, which could allow it to regain control over border regions. “Because they cannot form a united front and attack the enemy collectively, we are in a worrying situation where areas along the Mizoram border could return to military rule. If we unite all available forces to fight, this will not happen. It is very disheartening to hear that some are allying with outsiders to fight their own people,” Chief Minister Lalduhoma said. The Chief Minister further stated that although a constitution was drafted to enable civil and armed forces in Chin State to live cohesively under a single administration, disagreements emerged among ethnic groups just before the signing, preventing its execution to this day. He also noted that while Chin revolutionary groups speak their respective ethnic dialects, they use Burmese as a common language. He added that language is more critical than blood ties for building close communication and reunification among them. According to the current military situation, the military junta has regained control of Falam and Tonzang towns, which were previously seized by Chin revolutionary forces, and has launched counter-offensives to retake most areas within Thantlang town. Additionally, in Mindat and Kanpetlet towns, the military junta is deploying thousands of ground troops in offensives, while also conducting intense airstrikes, according to military sources. A Chin military analyst commented that while the loss of some territories due to disunity among Chin forces is partially true, unity cannot be built on goodwill alone. “It is true that there are losses in military operations because they do not fight under a single command. However, without resolving the underlying disagreements, unity cannot be established through goodwill alone,” the analyst said. Nonetheless, the analyst added that the Mizoram state government and the Chief Minister deserve recognition and gratitude for their efforts to foster unity among Chin revolutionary forces and for hosting and caring for displaced persons. The Mizo and Chin peoples share many cultural, traditional, and religious beliefs, viewing each other as blood brothers. Currently, of the nine townships in Chin State, the military junta controls Hakha, Falam, Tedim, and Tonzang. Chin revolutionary forces control Mindat, Kanpetlet, and Matupi, while Paletwa is controlled by the Arakan Army (AA). In Thantlang, both forces remain deployed in active confrontation.
