Indonesia, China Forge Housing Tech Pact; Local Products, Labor to Be Prioritized

Indonesia's Ministry of Housing and Settlements (PKP) and the Chinese government are preparing housing technology cooperation, including technology transfer for the construction of apartment buildings in densely populated areas. This cooperation is based on the principle of mutual trust and mutual benefit, aiming to create positive impacts for both nations. Minister of PKP, Maruarar Sirait, stated that the specific technology has not yet been determined, explaining that the Chinese side will first study Indonesia's land conditions and relevant regulations. "After the Chinese side studies the land and regulations, we will determine what technology is suitable," he said. A significant aspect of this cooperation is the emphasis on benefiting the domestic industry. The Ministry of PKP is encouraging the prioritization of Indonesian products, provided they meet the qualification requirements. Similarly, local labor will also be prioritized. "If there are products from Indonesia that meet the qualifications, Indonesian products will be prioritized. The same goes for labor," Sirait emphasized. The discussions took place during a meeting between Minister Sirait and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Indonesia, Wang Lutong. Both parties deliberated on the potential for cooperation between the Ministry of PKP and China's Ministry of Housing, with a focus on developing safe and affordable apartment technology. To expedite the discussions, both sides agreed to establish a joint team tasked with deliberating on regulations, land, technology, and implementation schemes for development. This team will include officials from relevant departments within the Ministry of PKP. The team is expected to survey and discuss potential development lands, with their findings scheduled to be reported to the Minister of PKP and the Chinese Ambassador by the end of September 2026. China has expressed its readiness to strengthen housing cooperation with Indonesia, including through the exchange of experience and technology in housing construction and management.
