AHRLA raps Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Bangkok
In a statement released on 6 August, Mr Phil Robertson, Director, Asia Human Rights and Labour Advocates (AHRLA) has criticized the two-day visit of former Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to Bangkok, which began today. “Prime Minister Anutin should be ashamed to host Min Aung Hlaing, a murderous Myanmar military officer with the blood of countless Burmese on his hands. Min Aung Hlaing’s vanity and thirst for power have single-handedly plunged his country into civil war after his illegal military coup in February 2021 that deposed the duly elected Myanmar government. Thailand is engaged in an effort that could be best characterized as the triumph of hope over experience, and once again, they will end up with little except bad publicity on the world stage because of their complicity with one of the worst human rights abusers in Asia. “The deaths of thousands, displacement and untold suffering of millions, and destruction of Myanmar’s economy can all be laid at Min Aung Hlaing’s feet. The rigged, illegitimate “election” that he presided over ruined any hope of a restoration of democracy in the country. Min Aung Hlaing oversaw the Myanmar military’s genocide against the Rohingya people in Rakhine state, constituting serious crimes against humanity for which he should be standing trial at the International Criminal Court. “Thailand has not escaped the horrific impacts from Min Aung Hlaing’s misrule. The lawlessness of Myanmar military rule enabled the proliferation of scam centers on the border that enslaved thousands while ripping off millions of people in Thailand around the world. Bombing campaigns against civilians and forced conscription of Myanmar’s youth have sent continuous waves of desperate, impoverished migrants to Thailand. China and Myanmar’s uncontrolled exploitation of rare earth minerals and gold is now sending torrents of toxins into northern Thailand’s rivers, destroying the health and livelihoods of Thai people. “When is Thailand going to wake up and realize that Min Aung Hlaing and his military compatriots are the core problem in Myanmar – and never will be part of the solution? ” The post AHRLA raps Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Bangkok appeared first on ENG.MIZZIMA.COM.
