Vietnam tells story of “Doi moi” at Belgium’s solidarity festival

Vietnam has shared the success story of its economic reform "Doi Moi" with the international community at a solidarity festival held in Belgium. The festival provided an opportunity to call for stronger relations between Vietnam and the European Union (EU), particularly the effective implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), and the early removal of the European Commission's "yellow card" warning against Vietnamese seafood exports. Vietnam asserted that its efforts to improve its legal framework and promote sustainable fisheries management should be recognized. NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man urged Belgium to continue supporting Vietnam in its next development phase by expanding cooperation, especially in areas where Belgium's strengths align with Vietnam's demands. The Belgian government also indicated its intention to assist in scrubbing dioxin, a highly toxic residue from wartime defoliants, from contaminated areas. While enhancing its international presence, Vietnam is also focusing on cultural promotion domestically. For instance, the Vietnam Festival in Kanagawa has become an important bridge connecting the people of Vietnam and Japan. Hang Ma Street in Hanoi is vibrantly decorated with traditional festival items. The second Thang Long – Hanoi Festival 2026, themed "Heritage Flow," aims to bring traditional culture closer to the public, expand international exchange, and contribute to the development of Hanoi's cultural industries. Furthermore, Vietnam is participating in international sports arenas. Vietnam will send a delegation of nearly 500 members to the Asian Games (ASIAD), aiming to win at least four gold medals. This reflects Vietnam's ambition for national strength and enhanced international standing. These activities demonstrate Vietnam's pursuit of multifaceted development beyond economic growth since the "Doi Moi" policy, encompassing culture, sports, and international cooperation. In particular, the strengthening of relations with the EU and the vibrant cultural exchanges with diverse countries such as Japan, Argentina, Cuba, and Slovakia signify Vietnam's expanding role in the international community.
