A village chief in Medan, North Sumatra, has issued an apology after a video showing her mocking a resident's complaint about public street lighting went viral on social media. Syerly, the village chief of Paya Pasir sub-district, faced widespread criticism online for her reaction. The incident occurred while Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution was visiting the area. A resident approached the mayor to express concerns about the lack of street lighting, stating they had personally funded the installation of four lamp posts due to rising crime. During the resident's plea, Syerly, standing beside the mayor, was heard laughing and saying, "Oh, she's complaining." Syerly later claimed her remark was a spontaneous reaction stemming from her close relationship with the resident, whom she described as a friend. "It was purely my spontaneity. Because I felt close and familiar, and often joked with Mrs. Ulfa, and vice versa, it just slipped out," she stated, as quoted by detikcom. She also asserted that the issue of street lighting had been reported to the Medan Transportation Agency since last year. Syerly confirmed that she had been summoned by the Medan City Inspectorate for questioning regarding the incident. Mayor Bobby Nasution has stated that a decision on Syerly's position will depend on the results of the ongoing investigation by the Inspectorate.
