Cambodia Urges Media to Uphold Balance, Professionalism Amidst Fake News Concerns
Cambodia's Ministry of Information has urged media outlets to practice balanced, professional, and responsible reporting to combat the spread of fake news. The call was made during a meeting with provincial media officials as part of an ongoing campaign against disinformation.
Cambodia's Ministry of Information has called on media professionals to disseminate information that is balanced, professional, and highly responsible, and to collectively prevent the spread of fake news. His Excellency Tep Asnarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, made these remarks during a consultative meeting on "Public Opinion Information Work and the Implementation of the 'Say No to Fake News' Campaign, Step 2." The meeting was attended by leaders, officials, and contract staff from the Information Department of Kampong Speu Province. Ms. Men Sinnuon, Director of the Information Department of Kampong Speu Province, warmly welcomed the presence of the Undersecretary of State and the Ministry of Information's working group. She presented a summary report on the information and public opinion work carried out by the department. The report highlighted significant achievements, particularly the active campaign against fake news conducted in various districts, cities, and schools within the province. These efforts have greatly contributed to raising awareness among citizens and students at the grassroots level. During the event, His Excellency Tep Asnarith urged the reinforcement of producing short video clips on provincial development, enhancing the capacity of information officials and journalists in monitoring and managing information and public opinion situations for better outcomes, and strengthening cooperation with leaders, ministries, departments, and local authorities in districts and cities. He also emphasized the collective effort to prevent the spread of fake news that could cause unrest and affect social security. Furthermore, all information officials in Kampong Speu Province were instructed to grasp all information and reactions from local residents to respond and provide accurate information in a timely manner. They were also urged to continue disseminating and educating the public about the impacts of fake news and how to verify information before believing or sharing it.
