Thai Military Seizes 135 Packs of Smuggled Cigarettes at Cambodian Border, Arrests 7

Thai military forces, operating along the border facing Battambang province, intercepted 135 packs of smuggled cigarettes and arrested seven individuals. The operation, which also saw three vehicles seized, occurred just before the smugglers were set to transport the contraband to Sa Kaeo province in Thailand. At approximately 3:20 AM on August 31, 2026, the Chanthaburi Marine Task Force, in collaboration with the Trat Provincial Marine unit, intercepted three suspicious vehicles in Tepnimitt village, Pongnamron district, Chanthaburi province. Seven suspects were apprehended, and 135 packs of foreign "Texas" brand cigarettes were confiscated. Initially, the suspects confessed to being hired to transport the cigarettes from the border region of Cambodia to Sa Kaeo province, with the goods originating from the Cambodian side opposite Kamrieng district in Battambang province. As a result of the operation, military officials arrested seven suspects, seized three vehicles, and confiscated 135 packs of "Texas" brand foreign cigarettes. Investigations are currently underway regarding the non-payment of taxes and the lack of relevant documentation. The incident has prompted questions from various quarters: how are merchants still managing to smuggle cigarettes across the border into Thailand when the border is completely closed? And which checkpoints lack sufficient border patrol presence? During initial investigations, the suspects admitted to being hired to transport the cigarettes from the border area to Sa Kaeo province. Subsequently, the authorities took the seven suspects, along with the vehicles and the substantial evidence, for further questioning to identify other involved parties and proceed with legal procedures.
