Cambodia to Host Speakers' Conference, Over 50 Countries and 10 International Organizations Confirm Participation

Cambodia is set to host the 19th Conference of Speakers of Asian and Pacific Parliaments for Peace and Sustainable Development in late August 2026. Currently, more than 50 countries' legislative leaders and over 10 international organizations have confirmed their participation, according to the spokesperson for the Cambodian Senate. In an exclusive interview with the Cambodian News Agency (AKP) on July 20, 2026, spokesperson Chea Thyris stated that the number of participating countries could increase further as the conference approaches in about a month. He highlighted the high level of interest from various nations, noting that intellectuals and experts will also be present. The hosting of this conference aligns with the two key objectives set forth by Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen: ensuring accountability between legislative bodies and constituents within the country, and strengthening parliamentary diplomacy. The spokesperson emphasized that Cambodia's role as host will contribute to enhancing the nation's prestige and international relations. He added that legislative institutions, in coordination with the executive branch, will mutually complement each other to elevate Cambodia's global standing. This international conference is considered a significant opportunity for Cambodia to host a historic global event, aiming to bolster the synergy between the country's diplomatic initiatives and parliamentary activities in both domestic and international contexts.
