Cambodia Fuel Prices Surge Past 5,000 Riel for Gasoline, 6,000 for Diesel Amid Global Oil Rally

PHNOM PENH, Sept 21, 2026 (KPT) — Retail fuel prices in Cambodia have climbed above 5,000 riel per litre for regular gasoline and 6,000 riel for diesel, as rising international oil costs continue to push up domestic energy prices, officials said Monday. Under a joint announcement by the ministries of commerce, economy and finance, and mines and energy, the new rates apply from September 21 through October 1. Regular gasoline, or Gasoline 92, is now sold at 5,250 riel (US$1.29) per litre, while diesel, or Gasoil 10ppm, has risen to 6,100 riel (US$1.50). The adjustment represents increases of 450 riel for gasoline and 650 riel for diesel compared with the previous rates. Authorities said the new retail prices reflect fluctuations in regional and global markets. To cushion the impact, the government is maintaining a 6.5‑cent‑per‑litre reduction, with an additional one‑cent cut triggered when international prices exceed US$90 per barrel for gasoline and US$100 for diesel. Customs duties on fuel imports remain at zero. Officials added that the special tax on gasoline has been cut from 30 percent to 15 percent, while the diesel tax has been eliminated. VAT on gasoline has been reduced from 10 percent to 4 percent, while VAT on diesel has been cut to zero. The government said it is absorbing 6 percent in taxes on gasoline and 10 percent on diesel, reducing state revenue by about US$50 million per month. The latest increase underscores the pressure of global energy markets on Cambodia’s economy. The World Bank has warned that higher oil prices could weigh on household purchasing power and business competitiveness. The Cambodian economy, reliant on tourism and exports, could see indirect impacts from increased energy costs.
