Young Lao Artists Foster Cultural Exchange in China, Building Bridges Through Traditional Arts

Young Lao artists studying traditional music and dance in China are overcoming cultural adaptation challenges and building bridges through cultural exchange. This initiative aims to deepen cultural connections between Laos, China, and ASEAN countries. Khampanya, a second-year student specializing in Chinese Traditional Music at Guangxi Arts University, graduated from the National School of Arts in Laos before receiving a scholarship to study in China, focusing on the erhu, a traditional Chinese two-stringed fiddle. Initially, adapting to life abroad was difficult due to differences in language, food, environment, and the university system. However, after about two months, he adapted, with the friendliness of his university friends and some Chinese dishes reminding him of home aiding his adjustment. Meanwhile, Chanthaphone Chanthavong, 21, a second-year student specializing in Chinese Traditional Dance, described her scholarship-funded study in China as a "great experience," where she has learned many new things. She has found opportunities to introduce Lao traditions and identity to her Chinese friends through dance, singing, and music, stating, "I feel very proud and happy." Guangxi Arts University is a comprehensive arts institution jointly established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, promoting artistic and cultural exchanges between China and Southeast Asia through initiatives like the China-ASEAN Art Museum Cluster. The Guangxi Ethnic Music Museum, opened in 2018, houses over 1,600 items, including traditional instruments and scores, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. For young Lao artists like Khampanya and Chanthaphone, studying in Guangxi is more than just education; it's a platform for fostering friendships, exchanging traditions, and creating cultural connections. Through erhu melodies, traditional dances, and Lao songs, they are demonstrating how culture can serve as a strong bridge between neighboring countries. They expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese government for the opportunity to study. Under Laos's one-party system, cultural exchange is often emphasized as part of soft power diplomacy. Relations with China are particularly close, not only economically but also culturally, due to historical and geographical proximity. Ties with Vietnam are also strong, stemming from historical connections, with ongoing regional cooperation evident in international conferences on infrastructure connectivity. While these exchanges offer young Laotians international perspectives and opportunities, concerns about China's expanding influence are also noted.
