Vietnam Cracks Down on 'Malicious Information' on Social Media

Vietnam is intensifying its crackdown on the spread of 'malicious information' on social media platforms. While social media offers significant convenience for information sharing, it has also become a breeding ground for the rapid dissemination of false and distorted content. Authorities warn that casual likes, shares, and comments based on unverified information can inadvertently contribute to the spread of malicious content. In response, the Vietnamese government is strengthening measures to prevent and counter malicious information on social media. These measures include clarifying the definition of malicious information, promoting social media literacy education among youth, and imposing stricter penalties on offenders. A recent case reported that a defendant received a 17-year prison sentence due to information disseminated on social media, indicating the authorities' firm stance. Vietnam operates under a one-party system led by the Communist Party, where maintaining social stability and order is a top priority. As the economy grows, opportunities for diverse domestic opinions and information to emerge via social media are increasing; however, the government tends to view this as subject to control. Information control, particularly concerning sensitive issues like Vietnam's complex relationship with China and domestic socio-economic disparities, is considered essential for national governance stability. The response to 'malicious information' on social media must be understood within this unique political and social context of Vietnam.
